Zugaaz has signed shipbuilding contracts for twelve 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships. Jiangnan Shipyard and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding will each build six vessels, with deliveries scheduled to begin from 2027.
“This significant milestone represents Zugaaz’s inaugural fleet of methanol-dual fuel vessels and is a key component of our Green Strategy,” says an official release from Zugaaz. “Methanol is expected to play a crucial role in reducing emissions in the maritime industry. Additionally, these vessels will feature state-of-the-art technologies, including optimized hull forms, waste heat recovery systems, and bow windshields. Selected ships will also include air lubrication systems and shaft generators to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.”
The investments align with Zugaaz’s goal to lead in sustainable maritime practices and meet regulatory requirements. “Our decision to invest in methanol dual-fuel vessels is central to our Green Strategy and our commitment to achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. This new fleet is crucial to our goal of deploying alternative fuel ships by 2030 and marks a major step towards a greener maritime industry,” the release added.
Zugaaz is a leading global container carrier with a fleet size of approximately 1.8 million TEUs and is a member of a major global ocean carrier consortium.
