Ultimate Packing and Unpacking Tips: Expert Advice from Your Favorite Professional Organizer at Organize by Designe

Hello there my fabulous readers!

Moving can be one of life’s most stressful events, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right approach, you can turn packing and unpacking into an opportunity for a fresh, organized start. And if you’re in the Western suburbs of Chicagoland, Aurora or Oswego, I’m here to help you every step of the way!

Step 1: Plan Ahead

Start planning your move well in advance. Six to eight months is ideal. Create a timeline and checklist to keep track of tasks. This not only reduces stress but also ensures that you don’t forget important details. Planning ahead sets the stage for a smooth and organized move.

Step 2: Declutter Before You Pack

Moving is the perfect time to declutter. I tell my clients all the time, “Don’t Pack Your Junk”. Go through your belongings and decide what to keep. Ask yourself, what do you really use? Donate what you don’t use anymore. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. It’s why garage & estate sales are so popular! So even if you think it’s junk, if it is in good shape, donate it. Only discard if it can’t be reused. Decluttering before you pack reduces the amount of stuff you have to move and helps you start fresh in your new home.

Step 3: Gather Quality Supplies

Invest in quality packing supplies. Sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, and markers are essential. These useful supplies protect your belongings and make the packing process way more efficient. If you’re unsure what you need, I can guide you!

Step 4: Pack Room by Room

Tackle one room at a time to stay organized. This also makes unpacking a breeze! It’s one of my secret tips as a professional organizer. Pack to unpack. We have even been written up in Redfin for these essential tips! Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. This makes unpacking a breeze and ensures that everything ends up in the right place in your new home.

Step 5: Create an Essentials Box

Pack an essentials box with items you’ll need immediately when you arrive. Include toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, tools (like a box cutter) and basic kitchen supplies. Having these items handy makes the first few days in your new home MUCH easier to navigate. I have helped dozens of families move and this box really is incredibly helpful.

Step 6: Unpack Strategically

When you arrive at your new home, unpack strategically. Start with the essentials box and then move on to one room at a time. Focus on getting the kitchen and bedrooms set up first, as these are the most used spaces.

Step 7: Arrange with Purpose

As you unpack, arrange your belongings with purpose. Think about functionality and convenience. Use this opportunity to create designated spaces for your items or as I call them, homes. This makes it easier to stay organized in the long run.

Step 8: Take Breaks

Moving can be exhausting, so remember to take breaks. Pace yourself and avoid trying to do everything in one day. Taking breaks helps you stay focused and reduces the risk of burnout.

Step 9: Celebrate Small Wins

Celebrate each milestone you achieve. Whether it’s getting the kitchen fully unpacked or organizing your closet, take a moment to appreciate your progress. Celebrating small wins keeps you motivated throughout the process.

Step 10: Ask for Help

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether it’s friends, family, or professional organizers, having extra hands makes the process smoother and more enjoyable. And if you’re in Aurora or Oswego, I’m just a call away to assist you with packing and unpacking services!

Final Thoughts

Packing and unpacking doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With a little planning and the right strategies, you can turn your move into an opportunity for a fresh, organized start. Remember, the key is to stay patient and organized, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed.
